CHILLOUT MUSIC HISTORY:
Chillout music is a subgenre of electronic music and is an umbrella term for several styles of electronic music. This genre developed in the 90s and generally follows the same composition:

- Mellow style
- Mid-tempo beats
- “Chill” meaning “relaxing”

The genre of “Chillout music” has evolved into many distinct subgenres. Acid house, for example, is characterized by deep bass lines and synthesized sounds. Music in the subgenre of ambient music put emphasis on tone and on atmosphere; it also implements the same four-on-the-floor rhythm patterns used in disco and dance music, synth pads, and vocal samples.

The 90s also saw the rise of Downtempo (sometimes referred to as trip hop), which is a genre of electric music similar to ambient sounds but with an emphasis on rhythm. It was a slower paced style of music that focused on melodic instrumentals and was mostly played in Chillout rooms—relaxation sections of clubs or dedicated sections at electronic music events.

Easy listening lounge music was popular in the 50s and 60s and was a good middle ground between hardcore electronic music and the slowed down house music. Its intention is to instill a feeling of being at peace in a place with a tranquil setting: the jungle, an island paradise, or outer space. Lounge music encompasses beautiful instrumentals, modern electronica (with influences from Chillout and Downtempo sounds), while still focusing on the retro-space-age elements.
